Goodbye Sitemeter!

Folks were wondering why I closed my Sitemeter counter since last two days, and some even sent me emails asking about it.

Well, here is the answer!

So OK, I did contact the "system administrator" three days ago. Until now, no reply, nothing, nada.

Could their server and particularly "sm7" have serious problems? A quick search on Google with "+sm7 +sitemeter" reveals that a lot of other accounts on server-sm7 are functional. And for several days Sitemeter used to stop and start my counters; as several hours used to register nothing but 0 (unbelievable, when readers were posting comments at the same time)!

Maybe this is an opportunity for them to force me to upgrade? After all, See Lai has huge traffic and if you also count the page views, See Lai's page-view figure was even higher than Instapundit; as thousands of readers visit the hundreds of beauties almost daily.

But if that was the case, how about sending me an email informing me that my free counter (though not exactly free, as they used to display their ads on my stats page) services were about to be suspended? My email address is right up there for the world to see (and in their records), or is Sitemeter run by Stevie Wonder?

Well, to me it looks like Sitemeter wants to stop their (so called) free service for See Lai due to heavy traffic and pageviews. Fair enough. But what bugs me is that how can Instapundit and others get away with using free Sitemeter with say 1.2 million pageviews per week, and See Lai, also bordering on 1.2 or 1.3 million pageviews per week has to be "blocked?"

"But you are a porn site, you see?" They might argue as Truefresco referrers (also ad based) argued with me last week and also blocked my (right side bar) referrers list (which is why it is no more) unless I paid couple of dollars a month to see who links to me!

Oh yeah? Do you see any freaking porn advertisements or request for your credit card details and say $4.99 subscription fee? And how about the other regular stories and features I have instead of just women?

There are thousands of "Sex Blogs" around the world, and no, not everyone wants to write about Bush, Iraq, and stupid brainwashing politics on their blogs. But I rest my case.

Now, if I want to continue using Sitemeter, from their "upgrade account" table, I see that for a site with "1 million to 2 million pageviews per month" (get out of here, we do that in a week), I need to pay US$49.95 per month!

Just in two months after I placed Sitemeter counter on all albums, my pageviews count jumped up from 3 million to 11 million something!

And now I need to pay friggin' 50 bucks every month to tell me who is coming from where and how often? That too, because I am ego-hungry and want to stroke my ego of how I was listed among top 30 blogs (by traffic rank) on a stupid site called "The Truth Laid Bear?"

No thanks, I will pass. And even if I go for a paid counter to supplement my Typepad raw (and hopelessly raw at that) statistics, I won't be selecting Sitemeter that even sucks in most of its reports and services.

As far as I am concerned, it is about time to say, "Goodbye Sitemeter, and yes, fuckoff!"

For the record, the last count (and also not very accurate) was 1, 440, 358 for unique visitors, and 11, 279, 834 for page views. When I start a new counter, I will add these figures alongside the missing three days' stats.

The Unfortunate Fowl

Perhaps, odd people are good chefs. Or, good chefs are odd folks. Take your pick. But it was announced that similar to Bert’s culinary skills, even Ah Chig carried a reputation of being a great Chiu Chow chef!

An afternoon with my wife and maid in Hong Kong’s wet markets, Ah Chig returned with two live chickens. To the horror of my wife and maid, Ah Chig insisted at the wet market stall that he would slaughter them in our kitchen, "so that the taste is fresh!"

As soon as Ah Chig was ready for his bird-killing spree, everyone gathered in the kitchen out of curiosity. Everyone that is, except the kids. My wife and Mrs. Ng stood near the door, the maids stood in a corner, while Bert and I stood behind Ah Chig to see it done.

Like a pro, Ah Chig washed his hands thoroughly, put on gloves, and held the first chicken by its neck. Soon he picked up a sharp cleaver and…

The Russian Connection

With eyes popped out wide, Ah Chig kept staring at Western ladies (gwaipo) in the Lan Kwai Fong bar. Had his eyes not betrayed his devilish intentions, he almost looked like an infant, eager for the embrace of his mother’s arms. But with every sip of beer he drank, the faint traces of saliva running down the sides of his mouth confirmed that his expectations were anything but tenderly.

Upon my wife’s suggestion, Bert and I accompanied Ah Chig to Lan Kwai Fong. "Take him to decent bars," my wife insisted. And I assured her that we would, provided comrade Ah Chig spoke simple Chiu Chow dialect that I can understand.

I gently nudged Bert and pointed at Ah Chig, who by now was desperate like a hunter hunting fowl. Conscious of our attention, Ah Chig turned his gaze towards us and flashed an embarrassed smile.

"Would you like to dance with gwaipos?" I asked Ah Chig in simple Chiu Chow.

Slow Loading

For the last three hours, this site - See Lai was loading very slowly. Sitemeter’s server (sm7) was down for three hours and that caused the problem. Now it seems that their problems are fixed; and hopefully the site will be normal again.

The Swift Dragon

Out here, the show never stops. How a 5' 7" athletic man was able to send a 6' 2" and 230 pound giant crashing on the garden lawn; with a jerk of his hand, is beyond me. But on Sunday afternoon Bert was cradling his dislocated arm.

"I won't be able to go to work for a couple of days," Bert said sheepishly as Apple sat by his side. In the corner of the living room, Ah Chig sat with his hands clasped as he guiltily looked at me and flashed a stupid smile.

It all happened while I was at the factory in Dongguan. "Having seen demonstrations in the PLA Parade," my wife explained, "Bert wanted to learn how it was done, and Ah Chig obliged but wasn't careful enough."

Part of me was overjoyed to see Bert whimper with agony and pain. But the other part of me was depressed with the thought that now both Ah Chig and Bert will spend most of their time at the house. Most of the time that is, except during the tranquility when Ah Chig goes out on sightseeing tours of Hong Kong with Mrs. Ng and my wife.

"Intellectuals are never athletes, and athletes are seldom intelligent," I told Bert, "so it is really up to you whether you want to use your body or your brains." But my profound wisdom was lost on Bert, as it seemed he was looking for sympathy rather than a lecture.

After my family left with Ah Chig on sightseeing excursions, I sat for a while in the living room with Apple and Bert. However, I was soon fed up with Bert’s whimpering and Apple’s pampering. Therefore, I did what I really wanted to do – grabbed some peaceful sleep and much needed rest.
