Goodbye Sitemeter!

Folks were wondering why I closed my Sitemeter counter since last two days, and some even sent me emails asking about it.

Well, here is the answer!

So OK, I did contact the "system administrator" three days ago. Until now, no reply, nothing, nada.

Could their server and particularly "sm7" have serious problems? A quick search on Google with "+sm7 +sitemeter" reveals that a lot of other accounts on server-sm7 are functional. And for several days Sitemeter used to stop and start my counters; as several hours used to register nothing but 0 (unbelievable, when readers were posting comments at the same time)!

Maybe this is an opportunity for them to force me to upgrade? After all, See Lai has huge traffic and if you also count the page views, See Lai's page-view figure was even higher than Instapundit; as thousands of readers visit the hundreds of beauties almost daily.

But if that was the case, how about sending me an email informing me that my free counter (though not exactly free, as they used to display their ads on my stats page) services were about to be suspended? My email address is right up there for the world to see (and in their records), or is Sitemeter run by Stevie Wonder?

Well, to me it looks like Sitemeter wants to stop their (so called) free service for See Lai due to heavy traffic and pageviews. Fair enough. But what bugs me is that how can Instapundit and others get away with using free Sitemeter with say 1.2 million pageviews per week, and See Lai, also bordering on 1.2 or 1.3 million pageviews per week has to be "blocked?"

"But you are a porn site, you see?" They might argue as Truefresco referrers (also ad based) argued with me last week and also blocked my (right side bar) referrers list (which is why it is no more) unless I paid couple of dollars a month to see who links to me!

Oh yeah? Do you see any freaking porn advertisements or request for your credit card details and say $4.99 subscription fee? And how about the other regular stories and features I have instead of just women?

There are thousands of "Sex Blogs" around the world, and no, not everyone wants to write about Bush, Iraq, and stupid brainwashing politics on their blogs. But I rest my case.

Now, if I want to continue using Sitemeter, from their "upgrade account" table, I see that for a site with "1 million to 2 million pageviews per month" (get out of here, we do that in a week), I need to pay US$49.95 per month!

Just in two months after I placed Sitemeter counter on all albums, my pageviews count jumped up from 3 million to 11 million something!

And now I need to pay friggin' 50 bucks every month to tell me who is coming from where and how often? That too, because I am ego-hungry and want to stroke my ego of how I was listed among top 30 blogs (by traffic rank) on a stupid site called "The Truth Laid Bear?"

No thanks, I will pass. And even if I go for a paid counter to supplement my Typepad raw (and hopelessly raw at that) statistics, I won't be selecting Sitemeter that even sucks in most of its reports and services.

As far as I am concerned, it is about time to say, "Goodbye Sitemeter, and yes, fuckoff!"

For the record, the last count (and also not very accurate) was 1, 440, 358 for unique visitors, and 11, 279, 834 for page views. When I start a new counter, I will add these figures alongside the missing three days' stats.

The Unfortunate Fowl

Perhaps, odd people are good chefs. Or, good chefs are odd folks. Take your pick. But it was announced that similar to Bert’s culinary skills, even Ah Chig carried a reputation of being a great Chiu Chow chef!

An afternoon with my wife and maid in Hong Kong’s wet markets, Ah Chig returned with two live chickens. To the horror of my wife and maid, Ah Chig insisted at the wet market stall that he would slaughter them in our kitchen, "so that the taste is fresh!"

As soon as Ah Chig was ready for his bird-killing spree, everyone gathered in the kitchen out of curiosity. Everyone that is, except the kids. My wife and Mrs. Ng stood near the door, the maids stood in a corner, while Bert and I stood behind Ah Chig to see it done.

Like a pro, Ah Chig washed his hands thoroughly, put on gloves, and held the first chicken by its neck. Soon he picked up a sharp cleaver and…

The Russian Connection

With eyes popped out wide, Ah Chig kept staring at Western ladies (gwaipo) in the Lan Kwai Fong bar. Had his eyes not betrayed his devilish intentions, he almost looked like an infant, eager for the embrace of his mother’s arms. "Would you like to dance with gwaipos?" I asked Ah Chig in simple Chiu Chow.

The Swift Dragon

Out here, the show never stops. How a 5' 7" athletic man was able to send a 6' 2" and 230 pound giant crashing on the garden lawn; with a jerk of his hand, is beyond me. But on Sunday afternoon Bert was cradling his dislocated arm.

"I won't be able to go to work for a couple of days," Bert said sheepishly as Apple sat by his side. In the corner of the living room, Ah Chig sat with his hands clasped as he guiltily looked at me and flashed a stupid smile.

It all happened while I was at the factory in Dongguan. "Having seen demonstrations in the PLA Parade," my wife explained, "Bert wanted to learn how it was done, and Ah Chig obliged but wasn't careful enough."

Part of me was overjoyed to see Bert whimper with agony and pain. But the other part of me was depressed with the thought that now both Ah Chig and Bert will spend most of their time at the house. Most of the time that is, except during the tranquility when Ah Chig goes out on sightseeing tours of Hong Kong with Mrs. Ng and my wife.

"Intellectuals are never athletes, and athletes are seldom intelligent," I told Bert, "so it is really up to you whether you want to use your body or your brains." But my profound wisdom was lost on Bert, as it seemed he was looking for sympathy rather than a lecture.

After my family left with Ah Chig on sightseeing excursions, I sat for a while in the living room with Apple and Bert. However, I was soon fed up with Bert’s whimpering and Apple’s pampering. Therefore, I did what I really wanted to do – grabbed some peaceful sleep and much needed rest.

Miss Chinese International Pageant 2005

Two words - Piss Poor!

Folks at TVB are hosting this year's Miss Chinese International Pageant. Take a look at (their) this year's models and pictures; and compare them with their last year's models and pictures.

The quality of models and pictures are hopeless. Furthermore, even on local television they have hardly promoted this event (Pageant 2005), despite the fact that they are supposed to be one of the top-local-terrestrial television channels in Hong Kong.

So what went wrong? Did their management change or do they face budget constraints? It appears that they uploaded the pictures only last night, even though the contest ends on January 29, 2005! Last year they had uploaded good quality pictures almost one month in advance!

Anyway, the links above will take you to both this year's and last year's models' index page(s). I think you will agree with me that it will be very difficult to judge who will win this year. To me, all of them look like blood-hungry ghosts from a cheap horror movie.

Perhaps, TVB needs to take some lessons from the management of See Lai - which is limited to yours truly until now - as in how to host contests and post/upload pictures.

A Helping Hand!

"Sir, he pee on the plants," the head-maid exclaimed as she came running to my study.

My wife and I jolt out of the bed as we hear Beethoven, Cookie, and Monkey, our three dogs; bark furiously - a sure sign of emergency. Dressed in nothing but a robe, I rush down and see Ah Chig standing near the closed French windows leading to the garden. The dogs keep standing in the garden and bark at him until I snap my fingers.

Moments later, Bert enters the living room dressed only in his boxers with his eyes swollen due to lack of sleep. But he soon ducks into a nearby corridor as my wife, now fully dressed, comes down the stairs.

I look at the clock in the living room – 03:45 a.m. Ah Chig starts talking to my wife and me in complicated Chiu Chow language, but unable to understand much, I flash him a Bert-like smile. Meanwhile Bert, embarrassed by his lack of adequate clothes, silently walks behind the couches and then runs back to the guest bedroom.

After my wife translates for me, I understand that as soon as Ah Chig started his Kung Fu or whatever practice in the living room, the dogs came up to the French windows and started barking at him. Of course Beethoven, Cookie, and Monkey might have felt intimidated by someone shouting "Hoo Hah" while kicking and punching in mid-air.

The Grand Arrival

Before Bert and I could unwrap and flash our embarrassing placard, an athletic and agile man came running towards us carrying two huge red, blue, and white striped nylon goods-delivery bags. Almost resembling Bruce Lee, Ah Chig greeted me enthusiastically, handed me an old Yashica camera with a detachable flash, and then ran back to the arrivals gate.

"Is he leaving already?" Bert asked confusedly.

"I guess he wants me to take a picture of him at the arrivals gate."

While Bert stood guard on Ah Chig’s bags, I followed Ah Chig and took pictures of him flashing victory signs amidst the scorn of other tourists coming out of the gate. The glorious moment safely captured, we returned to Bert and the bags.

With his 6' 2" frame towering above Ah Chig, Bert offered to take the bags, a thoughtful gesture; considering my health. But after three faltering steps, Bert put down the bags.

"This stuff's sore heavy," said Bert, inspecting the painful marks on his fingers. Meanwhile, we fetched a trolley. How on earth Ah Chig managed to run with them from the conveyor belt to the arrivals gate; is anyone's guess.

A picture here, a picture there, it took us fully twenty minutes before we reached the car park. And soon with Bert by my side and Ah Chig at the back, we finally drove out of the airport. Ah Chig kept talking in complicated Chiu Chow dialect, but I couldn't understand a fuck. Nonetheless, I kept nodding and smiling while randomly uttering "yes" and "oh" in Chiu Chow language.

Once on to the world's longest suspension, or second longest bridge - Tsing Ma Bridge, Ah Chig freaked out and started shouting "STOP" in Chiu Chow dialect.

The More The Merrier

Post corrected and updated

Apple and Bert will be unable to have sex in the guest bedroom at our house anymore, at least until after the Chinese New Year. Forget Apple, even Bert might not be able to solely enjoy the guest bedroom anymore because Ah Chig (Sp.?) is coming to town!

A late night call from my mother-in-law from Canada, and she boldly announced that under Mainland China's new individual visitor scheme, Ah Chig had finally decided to visit Hong Kong for two weeks. Besides, he will need our help in visa extension until Chinese New Year, and therefore his total stay period will be almost one month.

As soon as I was seated with my coffee, Bert started looking around like women afraid of eavesdroppers, and started whispering, "Ron, I need your advice and suggestions regarding the gift for today's anniversary."

"You mean gift for His Foolish Highness?" I was more shocked than I was surprised.

"No, no, today is exactly one month since Apple and I..." Bert paused and blushed before completing his sentence, "started seeing each other."

Holy Mother Teresa in Bikini! This guy is beyond cure! As if Catherine saga wasn't enough, now the langur wants to celebrate monthly love-anniversaries!

"What should I give her?" Bert eagerly looked at me with confident expectations that I wouldn't fail him.

"Tampons!" I barked excitedly. "Yes! Tampons, as in sanitary napkins for women!"

Linux

The last remains of Microsoft system that I have needs to be thrown out of the window!

Sorry, I was unable to read or reply all your emails for several days and even the posting at this site has been slow due to technical problems.

Now all you Linux experts out there, what version of Linux (server) should I go for this time? Any ideas about functionality? Especially (girly) pictures, music, and video-streamlining (as in MPEG 2.0 or 4.0 VCD/DVD rendering from HandyCam, etc.).

I have decided to completely give up on Microsoft, and that means the XP I used to surf on the internet, reply emails, etc. I would rather prefer a server version than a desktop version of Linux. Many thanks for any possible suggestions in advance.

Walking in the chain gang (read: Microsoft), no more!

Model Contests

I know I have been a bit slow with the different Model Contests here at See Lai. However, here is what I plan to do:

1. The Model of the Week/Month contests for 2004, where currently we have one running on the left side bar featuring the final models of December, will end during this week.


2. I am already working on the design and code for Model of the Year - 2004 contest (which has been delayed), and I expect to line up all twelve months' winners in the final (2004) winner contest. John Jerles is helping with that and so tons of thanks to him.


3. During this week I will start the Model of the Week/Month contest with fresh models for 2005.

So in all, we have like two new contests coming up and one (current one) closing.

Once again I am sorry for the delay and I thank you all for your patience.

The Vulgar Countdown

It was probably a very good idea that right after the countdown at our own house, my wife and I forced our kids to go to bed. The countdown to 2005 was very normal, but what transpired afterwards was far from normal.

While I served mild drinks to my wife, Mrs. Ng, Apple, and our maids (who have been with us for years and we consider them as part of our family), I fixed some tricky cocktails for Bert. After two such cocktails, Bert was half drunk when he suggested:

"Ron, let's do the Full Monty for the ladies!"
