True Ghost Story?

Note: The events in this post took place more than a month ago, and at that time, Bert was not married. All pictures in this post via my 3G phone-camera. Pictures of the nearby huts were taken before I went into the communal house. Remaining pictures were too dark and even Photoshop couldn't help.

A trip to the New Territories, where my mother-in-law wanted to visit some of her distant relatives, Ah Chig, Bert, Apple, and Mrs. Ng decided they wanted to explore the remote corner of Hong Kong. So, the seven (not a lucky number in Chinese superstition) of us (including mo-in-law, my wife, and yours truly), decided to go in two separate cars.

As soon as we reached there, and after I saw the old excited ladies hugging mo-in-law as if she were a long lost World War II survivor, I suggested Ah Chig, Bert, and I drive around the New Territories and visit some exciting places. Without much ado, we left the ladies in a Yuen Long village and promised to return within 3 or 4 hours.

That is when my monkey brains started kicking in action. I had heard of a place near Tin Shui Wai (20 minutes drive from Yuen Long) West Rail Station, and some weird stories attached to it. I don't know much about that place, but I think Dave and Stefan would know a bit more.

In short, the place - especially a huge communal village house, surrounded by couple of small huts - was occupied by the Japanese during World War II. And the Japanese mercilessly killed and chopped hundreds of people (in that communal house and at the foot of a nearby hill).

It is said that ghosts wander or hang around that place even in broad daylight. And anyone who spends more than an hour inside that dreaded communal house; loses it for good (as in crazy forever) after 24 hours. I am still sitting here more than 40 days after I spent almost 3 hours in that place. Have I lost it? Well, my wife would say I never had it in the first place, so there. But read on, it gets more weird and strange...

Glistening Oases Amidst The Dry Desert

It took me fifteen minutes to change the concerned (you can see references to "Bert" and "Apple" on all pages), and I smiled. So overjoyed I was by Typepad's (almost instant) 'Search and Replace' function which helped me republish all posts with the imaginary names, that I opened a bottle of Singha beer and danced around the room (I am not supposed to drink).

Then I randomly checked pages about "Bert," and my smile vanished. While the necessary changes have been made to all posts, keywords, categories, etc., references to our original hero and heroine remain in the comments posted by readers (and me).

Somehow, Typepad does not change anything in comments (via its 'Search and Replace' function).  Now it's a mess. New readers will start wondering why there are different characters in the posts and comments. Familiar readers will constantly remember what was (is) going on.

Damn! I could change everything back to normal. The alternative is disheartening - I have to reread thousands of comments and manually change each and every comment to reflect the desired change. Instead of my premature praises for Typepad, I have this to say - Typepad sucks!

Well, any or all changes will have to wait until I return to Hong Kong (tonight).

Update: Lo and behold! Since Bert ends in "s," now the change has added odd mistakes like "Bert's!" instead of "Bert'." The world used to be a better place before my monkey brains encouraged me to trust Typepad's special functions.

To Delete Or Not To Delete?

Since Bert is no longer living in my house, I am a bit concerned about Bert related posts here at See Lai.

If you type "Bert" in the Yahoo search box (right sidebar), you get more than 1,000 articles/posts about Bert on this site (See Lai).

The whole world can read about how unique Bert really is. Like his fetish of painting hookers' cunt-lips red, his habit of wearing hookers' panties over his head, his preference for sexy male thongs as opposed to normal underwear, and hundreds of other facts about Bert (via search as mentioned above) that are too embarrassing.

Also, what about my own mischievous pranks? Like the time I added female contraceptive pills in his drinks, and Methylene Blue so that his pee would turn blue, and forced him to act like an idiot in front of imaginary ghosts.

All that was fun at that time. But now it's posing a serious problem. I know that Bert hates technology (because his family is in the technology business?) and doesn't surf the Internet. For almost two years during which he traumatized me while living in our house, I never saw him check his email, etc. And similar to me, he is a "telephone man." Meaning he prefers telephone conversations instead of email correspondence.

But what about Apple? Now that Bert and Apple are (actually will. They are on their honeymoon tour) living in their own apartment, I can't possibly control Bert's, or rather Apple's actions. What if Apple surfs the Internet, and decides to type the dreaded words (+Bert +"Hong Kong") in a popular search engine?

John and I discussed this problem last night, and we think Apple would probably divorce Bert, and worse, sue him or something. Damn!

This is why I am thinking. Should I delete all posts and stories related to Bert? Or should I just change the names (Bert and Apple, etc., are real life names [on See Lai])? Well, any suggestions?

Good Or Bad? You Decide!

Finally, the moment has arrived! Some of you already know that by the end of this week, Bert will be a married man. Yep, his (first) wedding is coming up and I am actually looking at my watch.

This means that everything in my life is upside down. Bert is overly excited. Ah Chig is jealous and anxious at the same time. My family (especially my wife and Mrs. Ng) is having fun. And Bert is asking me more and more stupid questions almost every hour of the day.

Well, it also means that I will be very busy throughout this week, and will be a bit slow in blogging at See Lai. However, I am sure I will upload the models tomorrow. So hurry up with your votes.

Besides, I also want to write about a (true?) ghost story, that I have been delaying since two weeks.

Anyway, the good part of Bert's wedding is the fact that he will be out of my house for good. The bad part? I might go crazy before he actually gets married. And the disheartening part? Ah Chig thinks I will find him a bride, like I did for Bert.

Really! Kill me before I lock myself in a room full of burning charcoal and suffocate to death.
