Good News:
Four employees of our Hong Kong corporation, two of them senior managers, and their families arrived safely back to Hong Kong. A group of fourteen people, they were relatively inland, and therefore extremely lucky when disaster struck their vacation resort in Phuket.
I wasn't even aware they were in that area, so this news came as a surprise.
However, I was aware that fellow Hong Kong blogger - Ran Hasa was surfing in Sri Lanka, exactly when the disaster struck! I was extremely worried about Ran, because he went to Sri Lanka specifically for surfing!
Today I am more than happy that even Ran and his friends came out of the disaster safely and without serious injuries or harm. Much to our relief, Ran and his friend have posted a long comment today. Although, it is understandable that while physically all right, they are both extremely traumatized.
Go read their comment (scroll down in the link above) and the first hand account of how and what Ran and his friends went through right in the middle of the tsunami!
Even the descriptions about the disaster from our employees made me realize that despite reading a lot of news and watching endless TV clips, we can hardly imagine how it really was. Anyway, to cheer them up, I pointed out that while the Chinese believe fourteen to be a very unlucky number (because in Cantonese it sounds like sure-death or will surely die), their group (employees and their family members) comprised of exactly fourteen people. And therefore, the myth of fourteen is bullshit. They did laugh at my joke, but I think it will be a long time before they get over their trauma.
Bad News:
I am aware that one of our close business associate, also Hong Kong Chinese, was in the area and vacationing with his family and friends.
However, until today evening, no one has heard anything from him or the people traveling with him. Even his relatives in Hong Kong have no clues and we can only hope for the best.
This truly was a huge natural disaster. One that will be remembered by generations to come!
Later...
